Wrestling fans were oddly excited to learn that Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch were dating in real life, but it was WWE that decided to take things a step further when they were paired up as a tag team on RAW. The then Universal Champion and RAW Women's Champion squared off with everyone from Andrade and Zelina Vega to Baron Corbin and Lacey Evans, but it never quite clicked.
That was no reflection on their talent, of course, but "The Man" really didn't need a partner at the time, and the whole thing just felt like a blatant ratings grab.
Rollins and Lynch are now married and have welcomed their first child into the world, but the former recently opened up on what went wrong with this on screen partnership. "We did it briefly a couple years ago, before we were married, but we were dating, and it had become public and people were excited about it," Rollins recalls. "And the company came to us and asked us to kind of bring it to the screen, if you will."
"We tried to make the best out of it, but I don’t think either of us were terribly comfortable with it, and even though we have incredible chemistry, as people and as performers, our characters never really vibed on screen."
"Her character is she’s a loner," Rollins continued. "She doesn’t need anybody. To see that character in a relationship, it doesn’t feel good. It never felt good. Especially now, I don’t know what it would look like. Her character’s not built for a number two. It’s just really not and so no harm in that. I just don’t think we need to touch on it ever again. We’ll see what happens, but that’s that’s how I feel at the moment."
It's no wonder they didn't want to have their relationship play out on RAW each week, and Rollins was quick to reiterate that, moving forward, "we’ll stay away from it. We just won’t touch on it."
Rollins and Lynch are big enough stars that they should be able to make sure it doesn't come up again, but it's hard to imagine them not ending up side-by-side again. After all, this is the sort of thing WWE loves to play around with on TV, hence why everyone from Rusev and Lana to John Cena and Nikki Bella have been lumbered with storylines that highlight their real-life relationships (or ex-relationship in Cena and Bella's case now).
Only time will tell.
