Talking in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer has cleared up some big rumours about WWE Championship plans heading into this year's WrestleMania.
Heading into Day 1, Big E was supposed to defend the title against Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, and Bobby Lashley. However, Roman Reigns testing positive for COVID-19 meant Universal Championship challenger Brock Lesnar was inserted into the bout, ultimately pinning Big E to win the WWE title.
According to Meltzer, Rollins was supposed to win the Championship at Day 1. The plan from there was for him to defend the title at the Show of Shows, likely against the winner of the Royal Rumble. Big E was favourite to win that match, but Owens and Lashley were named as possibilities as well. Now, though, "the match in that position may remain the same, but getting there is different."
Meltzer also noted that Rollins winning the title has been the plan for a while, but with Reigns and Lesnar now in control of their respective championships, we don't know how that will happen. The logical option might be to have the Head of the Table cost The Beast his title against Lashley at the Royal Rumble and then go from there.
We'll see, but be sure to keep checking back here for updates!
