The January 1, 2019 edition of SmackDown Live was pre-recorded on December 28, 2018 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA.

The following information is SPOILERS of the episode's tapings as reported by those in the live attendance:

— The New Day announce they will all be in the Royal Rumble.

Samoa Joe defeated Jeff Hardy to earn the final spot in a Fatal 5-Way (also featuring AJ Styles, Mustafa Ali, Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio) with the winner of that match facing Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble for the WWE Championship.

— There is a celebration for Rusev's United States Championship victory. Shinsuke Nakamura comes out to attack them.

— Sonya Deville defeated Naomi by pinfall with a spinebuster

— John Cena cuts a promo and issues an open challenge. Becky Lynch comes out to say she's "the man" around here now. Andrade "Cien" Almas and Zelina Vega interrupt and that prompts a mixed tag team match. John Cena and Becky Lynch defeated Andrade "Cien" Almas and Zelina Vega by submission.

— Shane McMahon and The Miz talk about their tag team.

— Carmella, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch all try to make the case to Triple H that they should be the next in line for a match against Asuka.

AJ Styles defeated Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, Mustafa Ali and Samoa Joe in a Fatal 5-Way match to earn the title shot at Royal Rumble against Daniel Bryan.
