Hours before SmackDown Live went on the air, it was reported that Vince McMahon had arrived at the show in the afternoon and told everyone that the show needed to be rewritten. As a result, the original plan to have Drew McIntyre and Elias take on Big E and Xavier Woods was scrapped.

Later, WWE announced that we'd be getting a champions vs. champions match with The New Day facing The O.C.

That too was changed by the time the show happened as Kofi Kingston ended up facing AJ Styles in a singles match. Needless to say, advertising matches that then don't happen isn't a great way to win over viewers and it's said that part of the reason this happened is because the show was up against the Democratic Presidential Debate on CNN.
