WWE has only been holding its shows in front of fans for the past couple of weeks, but it didn't take them long to drop the ball creatively. After a strong start earlier this month, the quality dipped in a big way during last night's SmackDown when John Cena got his (expected) SummerSlam match against Roman Reigns.
During last Friday's show, the Head of the Table accepted Finn Balor's challenge. That meant we got a contract signing on the latest episode, and Reigns and Balor exchanged harsh words.
After Reigns vowed that he'd send the challenger back to NXT, Balor made it clear he'd be happy to return to the brand...with the Universal Championship in tow! Just as he was about to sign the contract, though, Baron Corbin rushed out, attacked him, and attempted to sign it in his place. With that, Cena hit the ring, and he signed it, stealing Balor's match at SummerSlam in the process.
Paul Heyman later objected to that, but apparently, it's now official. Since returning to the main roster, Balor has been booked as someone Reigns doesn't take seriously and had his match stolen by the babyface Cena so he can wrestle Corbin instead (which we've seen countless times before).
