Kairi Sane won the Mae Young Classic after a hard-fought victory over Shayna Baszler, but it seems the original plan was to have the "Pirate Princess" defeat Toni Storm in the final.

According to the usually-reliable Wrestling Observer, Storm was set to face Sane in the finals of the tournament for quite a while before plans were altered once WWE decided to go all-in with the burgeoning Shayna Baszler/Four Horsewomen angle. As a result, Storm VS. Sane was moved to the semis.

This shouldn't hurt the talented Aussie wrestler at all, however, because she's still being hailed as one of the standout performers of the tournament and will likely get a big push if she decides to sign with the company on a permanent basis.

Kairi, meanwhile, will now go on to challenge for the vacant NXT women's championship at Takeover: Houston in November.
