Once the horror-themed Extreme Rules has been and gone, WWE will start building towards their biggest PPV of the summer, SummerSlam. Unfortunately, current world events mean that the show will have to take place in the WWE Performance Center (though that does likely mean we can look forward to at least one cinematic match).

Now, WrestleTalk is reporting that the planned main event for the show is going to be WWE Champion Drew McIntyre defending the title against Randy Orton.

The original plan was for The Viper to face WWE Hall of Famer Edge in the final match of their feud, but that idea was scrapped when the latter was injured at Backlash. The tentative plan now is for these two rivals to have a rematch at next year's WrestleMania (finally allowing Edge to move on to new opponents).

If Orton were to dethrone McIntyre, there's no denying that it would be interesting to see him defend the title against Edge at the Show of Shows, though that would obviously mean a lengthy run for Orton and one which pushes the Scottish Superstar out of the main event picture.
