Last month, John Cena returned to WWE at the Money in the Bank PPV in order to start a feud with Universal Champion Roman Reigns. Now, they'll square off at SummerSlam in the main event match, but before Cena's surprise comeback, we hadn't seen him since last year's WrestleMania.
Talking to Forbes, the 16-time WWE Champion - who is currently doing the rounds to promote The Suicide Squad - revealed why he's been gone for such a long time and what led to his return.
"You can’t have matches because the insurance companies bound you to the production. That’s very fair terms," Cena said of how his Hollywood commitments have affected his in-ring role in WWE. "I have this block of time, so instead of taking a deep breath and kind of letting it all sink in, I wanted to go home and see my family in WWE, so back to the ring I go!"
As for whether he'll be part of WWE beyond August's SummerSlam, all he'd say was: "Man, never say never about the WWE. Like I said, I had a month to myself and here I am back in a ring. So maybe if I get another month to catch my breath, I’ll hopefully make another visit back."
Clearly, Cena's acting career is a priority for him these days, and that does make sense. His WWE return has certainly helped the company at a time when they need it, but they can't rely on him forever.
Cena recently wrapped work on Peacemaker, a small screen spinoff of The Suicide Squad.
