When Rhea Ripley was injured and forced to vacate the WWE Women's World Championship, a Battle Royal was held to decide the new champion.
Becky Lynch ultimately picked up the win, a decision met with a surprisingly mixed response. That can be put down to WWE putting the title back on the veteran Superstar instead of using that opportunity to help create a new star (Chelsea Green, for example).
"The Man" is still immensely popular, though, and there's a lot of chatter surrounding her current contract status.
According to Fightful Select, as of yesterday morning, WWE and Lynch still hadn't come to terms on a new deal. Her current contract supposedly expires on June 1, meaning she could be a free agent by the time RAW airs next Monday.
Lynch is said to be keen on securing a big money deal which may end up being the biggest contract in the history of women's wrestling; that's a big ask, particularly with so many up-and-coming female Superstars in WWE who are now starting to gain bigger fanbases than those who helped usher in this new era for women in the first place.
Liv Morgan defeated Lynch for the WWE Women's World Championship at King and Queen of the Ring on Saturday night and was forced to put the title on the line again in a Steel Cage yesterday evening.
We'll bring you further details on that soon, but after failing to recapture the title on RAW, a dejected Lynch seemingly bid farewell to fans before later sending out a cryptic X post saying, "To be continued."
However, WWE has reposted that and we're hearing Lynch is simply taking some time away from WWE. With that in mind, despite the supposed contract drama, we wouldn't bank on seeing her make the leap to AEW.
"I don’t know the answer to these questions, I genuinely don’t," Lynch previously said of her future beyond wrestling. "I’m being so vague, and I don’t mean to be in any way cagey, but I feel like I have a great mind for wrestling and a great love for it. And so, it’s always going to be there in my heart and in my head. It’s part of my family."
"It’s the reason I have my family, so it’s so important to me. I just don’t know what that looks like in the future."
"I genuinely don’t have any answers for you because I don’t know. Life continues to surprise me in wonderful ways recently. You can make all of these plans, and sometimes they don’t go the way that that that you intended," she added. "But in the long run, something works out and something becomes better than you would’ve expected. And I feel like that’s been my whole run."
Stay tuned for updates.
