The original plan for Extreme Rules was a Six-Pack Challenge match which would have determined a new #1 contender for Brock Lesnar's Universal Championship. However, in what's being described as a "panic move," WWE changed that on Monday and it now appears as if the plan is to pit Roman Reigns against Bobby Lashley at the upcoming PPV with the winner then going on to face Lesnar.
According to Dave Meltzer, everything that's been said about The Beast's contractual issues is for storyline purposes and Vince McMahon is hoping that all this talk about Lesnar not caring about the WWE Universe will help get fans behind Reigns when he challenges for the title (again) at SummerSlam.
What Vince doesn't seem to realise is that SummerSlam takes place in front of a Brooklyn crowd who will almost certainly be hostile to The Big Dog and no one is buying him as someone being held back by WWE management. Lesnar, meanwhile, probably will be booed and the only good outcome for this match would be Braun Strowman cashing in to become the new Universal Champion!
