Despite conflicting stories in recent weeks, it's looking like William Regal is indeed returning to WWE after making the leap to AEW earlier this year.
Vince McMahon decided to release the former wrestler, a decision that shocked everyone considering he was a hugely important part of NXT as its General Manager, and a major contributor to the company as Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting.
Needless to say, releasing him was a major blunder and we don't blame Tony Khan for snatching him up.
Of course, things have changed since then as Triple H is now in charge of WWE. A longtime friend of Regal, they also worked extremely closely together in NXT, with the Brit proving key to enacting The Game's vision.
According to PWInsider, Regal is now finalising his WWE deal with the expectation being that he'll return to work shortly after the New Year.
Despite the fact Regal previously said he'd signed a three-year deal with AEW, it's looking like he had some sort of get-out clause, and with Triple H in charge, we can see now where he really wants to be. Given the company's hit-and-miss booking courtesy of the inexperienced Khan, we're not shocked he's returning home, especially after his recent "farewell."
After helping MJF defeat Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship, he remained silent while taking a verbal beating from MOX last week, and was physically attacked by MJF during the latest episode of AEW Dynamite. While it makes sense for Regal to leave AEW by putting another talent over, he didn't look too happy on either occasion.
Of course, Regal returns to WWE with a lot of inside knowledge about AEW, and once contracts start ending for some of that company's top talent, we can see talks between them and WWE kicking off very quickly...
