WWE Backstage on Fox Sports 1 appears to be done. In a bid to save money during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, FOX has decided to scale down the weekly production of boxing and WWE programming on its networks, and that explains why this studio show has received the axe.
Despite featuring CM Punk as an analyst, WWE Backstage has never managed to get over the 200,000 mark in terms of views since its debut last November, and the vast majority of episodes in recent months haven't even managed to come anywhere near the 100,000 mark. Cancellation seemed to be an inevitability, especially as it's now become a case of watching a Zoom conference each Tuesday.
"Today, we announced programming changes designed to better address the needs of our business," FOX Sports said in a statement today. "As a result, some positions in our production department have been eliminated."
Needless to say, many wrestling fans will now wonder what the future holds in store for CM Punk, especially as there are no clear indications that he plans to step back into the ring. It's also possible that there will be special episodes of WWE Backstage, but it's probably best not to get your hopes up!
