Stone Cold Steve Austin's battles with Mr. McMahon during the Attitude Era helped WWE win the Monday Night War, and will go down in history as one of the best rivalries in the company's history.
Of course, before the Texas Rattlesnake became Stone Cold, he was better known as the Ringmaster. WWE didn't have any real plans for him as that character, and as you might expect, Vince McMahon wasn't blown away by Austin's original persona when he first arrived in the company.
Talking during A&E's Stone Cold Steve Austin biography, Vince was asked what he made of the Ringmaster and, with a smile, he responded: "My initial impressions of him was, 'He's wasting my time.'" In the same interview, the WWE Chairman was also asked about portraying the Mr. McMahon character and in what we can only assume was a tongue in cheek response, he said "Mr. McMahon is no way in the world like me - we'll start with that. But he's arrogant, he's rich, can treat people like crap."
Austin, meanwhile, has his own thoughts on how things played out between his character and Vince's, and credited his "co-star" with why it worked so well on RAW each week.
"Vince and I were tailor-made for each other to work together. Vince was unique because he was the owner, and now he's feuding with me, it's a real storyline. All of a sudden, it wasn't just about wrestling - it was about this guy who's an employee, against his boss. And everybody is an employee who has a boss and a lot of times the employee has not liked what the boss has done or said to him."
The biography special is well worth watching, especially as it features some rare comments from Vince (who rarely speaks out of character).
