WrestlingNews.co is reporting that WWE is planning to have Brock Lesnar face Gunther at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles next year. The bout is listed internally in the company, and the current Intercontinental Champion has made no secret of his interest in facing The Beast.
Since Vince McMahon left WWE, we've seen Gunther really come into his own as one of the company's top heels. He's proven to be damn near unstoppable in recent months, with his match ("fight" might be a better word) with Sheamus at Clash at the Castle proving itself a legitimate match-of-the-year candidate.
Last month, Gunther even described a showdown with Lesnar as a "dream match." He'd add, "When I was young and watching WWE, I enjoyed watching his matches. Later on when I progressed in my career, I was able to watch wrestling and analyze how people work. He’s always been somebody I was impressed with. He’s one of the best to ever do it."
"I think that’s the biggest possible challenge for me at the moment."
While WrestleMania is still months away, the site adds that a source has told them Triple H already has all the top matches worked out. While Vince McMahon would frequently tear up plans and start from scratch, that's not how The Game is approaching being in charge of WWE Creative.
Lesnar is reportedly scheduled to take part in the Elimination Chamber PPV, so we're assuming he'll end his rivalry with Bobby Lashley there before going on to feud with Gunther. Assuming The Beast is willing to do more than the usual two or three moves, this clash between the two powerhouses could quite easily be one of the best matches from the entire weekend.
WrestleMania 39 is set to take place over two nights on April 1 and April 2, 2023.
