Roman Reigns defeated Sami Zayn in the main event of the Elimination Chamber premium live event to retain the WWE Universal Championship, leading to a lot of disappointment in Zayn's hometown of Montreal.
With Cody Rhodes waiting on his chance to "finish his story" at WrestleMania, a Sami victory was always highly unlikely... or was it?
According to The Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer, certain WWE higher-ups "actively pushed" for Zayn to pick up the win and become the new WWE Universal Champion. He doesn't reveal any names, but whoever they were, their ideas were obviously shot down.
Sami winning would have been a massive moment for that Montreal crowd and WWE fans in general, but it really wouldn't have made much sense given the storyline they've been building with the American Nightmare. The Tribal Chief hasn't had his shoulders pinned for the three-count in over 900 days, so they were never going to break that streak before Rhodes has the opportunity to do so on the biggest stage of them all.
Where does this leave Sami? A triple-threat match at 'Mania is possible, but we reckon him teaming with Kevin Owens to take on The Usos (or Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa) is more likely.
