Sami Zayn has been absent from recent weeks of WWE programming, as he chose not to compete during the COVID-19 pandemic. With no timetable of his return and Zayn as the current intercontinental champion, that posed a problem WWE had to rectify.
WWE's response today was to declare on WWE Backstage on FS1 that the Intercontinental Championship has been vacated.
The participants of this tournament have yet to be revealed, but we can assume some of the potential competitors will be those who were more recently involved in Zayn's feuds (Daniel Bryan, Drew Gulak, Cesaro, Shinsuke Nakamura and possibly King Baron Corbin). However, there are still plenty of other possibilities for new champions, including Sheamus, Jeff Hardy, Mustafa Ali, Shorty G and any number of SmackDown Superstars, as well as talent from Raw and NXT due to this new "brand-to-brand invitational" idea that was recently implemented as a means to somewhat circumvent the brand split.
