AJ Lee (now known as AJ Mendez) will go down as one of the greatest female wrestlers of all time. While it's a shame her WWE run didn't last a little longer, the former Divas Champion eventually going into the WWE Hall of Fame is surely a given.
Lee played a crucial role in changing the perception of female wrestlers in WWE, and fans were devastated when she left the company in 2015. Of course, given how they'd treated her husband, CM Punk, that wasn't overly surprising and Mendez hasn't stepped back into the ring since.
A lot has changed in the past near-decade, including the fact the Second City Saint is back in WWE and arguably happier than he's ever been. Could that result in AJ also eventually stepping back into the ring and heading "home"?
According to the WrestleVotes insider on SportsKeeda's Backstage Pass Patreon, "[Whether AJ Lee will return to WWE] is a question I get quite a bit. As far as I know, WWE is totally on board for it. They would welcome it. She picks up the phone and she says, 'I’m in.' They’re going to say, 'Yes. What took so long?'"
"I would say the only two people that probably know that answer are AJ Lee and CM Punk and whatever that answer may be is up to them. So we’ll see."
Earlier this year, Punk addressed the possibility of being joined by his wife in WWE:
"I'm the wrong guy to ask those questions about. I know there's a lot out there about that. But I'm certainly not pushing her to do anything, I think she knows that there's options, I think she sees how happy I am and how things are different." Punk continued to say that should that discussion ultimately be held, it would be between her and the appropriate parties and not one he would want to be part of. Although he admitted with a laugh, "Selfishly, yes. I would love to make out with my wife on television again."
Lee hasn't competed since the March 30, 2015 episode of RAW where she teamed with Paige and Naomi to defeat The Bella Twins and Natalya. That came the night after WrestleMania, a PLE which saw her and Paige beat Nikki and Brie in a tag team match.
Lee has actually been busy with a writing career since leaving the world of pro wrestling behind, so there's no real need for her to step back into the ring unless she's desperate to.
As always, stay tuned for updates.
