During Monday night's episode of RAW, Cody Rhodes made his way out to the ring to discuss his victory in the 30-man match at the Royal Rumble on Saturday.
However, before he was able to say too much, World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins joined him. The Visionary implored the American Nightmare to challenge him instead of Roman Reigns, dismissing the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship as a meaningless "Hollywood" title that's rarely defended.
Rollins put over his belt in a big way, making it clear he believes it's the championship Cody's father, the late WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, would have wanted to win. By the time the promo ended, Rhodes confirmed he would take Rollins' offer under consideration.
If this was WWE's way of trying to sell fans on Rollins vs. Rhodes at WrestleMania, it didn't work. Those in attendance loudly chanted "NO!" and the response online has been overwhelmingly negative.
People want Rhodes to dethrone Reigns on the Grandest Stage of Them All and his winning the World Heavyweight Championship instead simply wouldn't make the same impact. This may be WWE's way of setting the stage for the Tribal Chief to face Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, of course, but the company is risking a major backlash from fans!
"I don't want to be a downer, but no," Rhodes previously said of potentially winning Rollins' title. "Now, winning the World Heavyweight Championship would be outstanding. It would be amazing. It is the title on the flagship show, 'Monday Night Raw.' [It] absolutely matters; it is important."
"What Seth [Rollins] is doing with it is a special thing, and [what] you're going to see is that title will mean far more in five minutes, and then in 10 minutes. Every second it gains equity. But finishing the story was always, always, about the title that my dad didn't get."
Rhodes will be at SmacDown this Friday to make his final decision and, if we're lucky, he'll stick by his decision to choose Reigns.
