When news broke that WWE planned to bring Stone Cold Steve Austin back for a WrestleMania match against Kevin Owens, it was reported the company had another huge surprise planned.
Well, it turns out that's WWE Chairman Vince McMahon vs. SmackDown announcer Pat McAfee, but Dave Meltzer is reporting that the 76-year-old executive might not see too much action at the Show of Shows. Apparently, we can expect "smoke and mirrors" to be used, likely meaning the match as advertised won't take place or someone else will be getting involved in the bout.
After the last few months, common sense points to Austin Theory getting involved. McMahon no doubt feels that pulling him into a match like this will get the up-and-comer over as a top Superstar, though it's hard to say whether it's the best use of Theory without knowing what WWE has planned.
As Meltzer explains below, ticket sales for the two-night WrestleMania aren't where WWE would like them to be, hence why attraction matches like this one are being added to the card. By not revealing specifically on what night these huge bouts will take place, the hope appears to be that fans will end up buying for both, though it's unclear if that strategy is working right now.
With the storyline between McMahon and McAfee expected to kick off this Thursday, we'll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more about Vince's plans for the Showcase of the Immortals.
