Preview & Predictions for WWE SmackDown:
On tap for tonight's episode, Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk puts his title on the line against hometown challenger Kevin Owens following their highly personal confrontation last week.
As interesting as it would be, I do not see a title change happening tonight. Owens being in Canada would get a great reception, but since Sami Zayn didn't even get his opportunity to beat Cody Rhodes last week, which had a stipulation that if he was victorious, he would get the winner of this match, I think we're going to see another scenario where Zayn and/or other people get involved in this and it leads to a no-contest or some sort of shenanigans with Punk capitalizing to retain the title in dubious fashion so Owens has every right to complain and get another rematch out of it. WWE loves doing their "go back to the well for sips rather than taking a big gulp" most of the time, and I don't think this is going to be a one and done scenario for Owens against Punk.
Of course, we'll have more in the storyline development of Tatum Paxley befriending Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss, the fallout from Chelsea Green being given 30 days to defend the women's title while Tiffany Stratton lost the Women's United States Championship to Jacy Jayne on last week's episode, and more on the MFTs as the new WWE men's tag team champions, along with more warnings from Shinsuke Nakamura and his partner (after their vignette didn't air last time around and was made a digital exclusive). Does Matt Cardona continue to go after Gunther, or is he starting something with The Miz based on their digital exclusive interaction as well? Will Johnny Gargano actually do something this week? Is it all over for Wepa Up or will they not just immediately crumble?
Here are your results for WWE SmackDown - August 21, 2026:
- Sami Zayn opened the show backstage arguing with Nick Aldis about being denied another opportunity at the WWE Championship. Zayn complained that he competed with a broken hand last week only for Randy Orton to interfere and ruin his chance to earn a title match. Orton walked up behind him while he was ranting, but Cody Rhodes then appeared in the ring and called Orton out.
- Nick Aldis tried to keep Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton separated ahead of their match at Sunday Night's Main Event. Aldis said he was tired of the two putting officials and fans in danger and ruled that if either man touches the other before their scheduled match, that person will never receive another WWE Championship opportunity. Orton agreed and said he would be "Mr. Professional," but continued to needle Cody by saying Rhodes is too much of a good guy to go to the places Orton is willing to go, calling him the "American Daydream." Cody responded that even if Orton eventually wins his 15th and 16th world championships, he will still come back to Cody, who promised to be the one who kills the Legend Killer.
- Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga spoke backstage about their WWE Men's Tag Team Championship reign and invited anyone to step up against them. Haku joined his sons and fired them up ahead of their title defense.
- WWE Men's Tag Team Championship Match: Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga (c) defeated Damian Priest and Ron Killings by pinfall to retain the titles after hitting Killings with the Red Cross. The War Raiders watched the match from backstage. Priest appeared frustrated with Killings afterward but ultimately helped him back to his feet and hugged him.
- CM Punk told Cathy Kelley that wrestling Kevin Owens in hostile territory would not change his approach. Punk said Owens is still holding onto grudges from 20 years ago while Punk himself has changed and evolved. Randy Orton interrupted to warn Punk that after he handles Cody Rhodes, he intends to come after world championship No. 15. Punk said he was looking forward to it.
- Chelsea Green apologized to Tiffany Stratton for what happened the previous week and offered to make it up to her, but Stratton told Green to concentrate on recovering and protecting her own championship. Paige joined them and encouraged Green before Fatal Influence interrupted to talk trash. Paige then turned her attention toward Women's United States Champion Jacy Jayne and suggested that if Nikki Bella continues avoiding her, she may simply go after Jayne's title instead.
- Blake Monroe told Cathy Kelley that her first SmackDown match should have been a championship match on a much bigger stage rather than a match against Giulia in Toronto. When Giulia made her entrance, Monroe attacked her from behind before the bell, repeatedly assaulted her around ringside and finished the attack with the Neutralizer inside the ring. The scheduled Blake Monroe vs Giulia match never officially started.
- Backstage, Tatum Paxley continued trying to befriend Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss before Jade Cargill, Michin and B-Fab confronted them. Charlotte defended Paxley despite still being confused by her behavior. Michin challenged Paxley to a match next week, which an excited Paxley accepted before hugging Charlotte.
- Trick Williams came to the ring with Lil Yachty and called out United States Champion Baron Corbin, demanding another title match. Corbin refused because he has already beaten Trick twice and said Williams had nothing left to offer him. Yachty then struck Corbin with the Trick Stick and Trick clotheslined him out of the ring. Corbin responded by proposing a five-minute match against Yachty at Sunday Night's Main Event. If Yachty lasts the full five minutes, Trick receives another United States Championship match. If Corbin defeats Yachty before time expires, Trick is finished receiving title opportunities against him. Yachty hesitated before accepting the challenge.
- Kevin Owens was interviewed backstage ahead of the main event when Finn Balor approached him. Balor said he was glad to see Owens return at SummerSlam but wished Owens had given him some warning before interrupting his match. Gunther then arrived and told Owens that if he becomes WWE Champion, Gunther will be coming after him. After Gunther left, Balor encouraged Owens to beat Punk and added that he would also be waiting for a championship opportunity afterward.
- Lash Legend defeated Tiffany Stratton by pinfall with the Lash Extension. Nia Jax joined Legend in attacking Stratton after the match until the injured Chelsea Green ran out with a kendo stick and fought them off despite not being medically cleared.
- Shinsuke Nakamura revealed Kyoki, formerly known as Hiromu Takahashi, as his new partner. Kyoki talked about wanting more gold and more chaos, while Nakamura said that when madness and Strong Style collide, there will be an explosion. The pair made it clear that they have their sights on the tag team division and the MFTs.
- Undisputed WWE Championship Match: CM Punk (c) defeated Kevin Owens by pinfall with the Go to Sleep to retain the title. Owens appeared to have Punk beaten with a Stunner after the referee was accidentally knocked out, but there was nobody available to count the fall. Punk later hit Owens with a GTS while the referee was still down. Sami Zayn then jumped the barricade, attacked Punk and helped get the referee back into the ring after Owens hit another Stunner, but Punk kicked out. Zayn slid the WWE Championship into the ring and urged Owens to use it as a weapon. Owens refused and told Sami he did not want to win that way, prompting Zayn to hit Owens with the championship instead. Punk immediately capitalized with the GTS for the victory. After the match, Zayn also struck Punk with the title, hit Owens again and then laid Punk out with another championship shot. Zayn screamed that Punk had stolen the title from him and stood over both men holding the WWE Championship to end the show.
