Tonight's episode of WWE SmackDown (Friday, September 18, 2026) emanated from Hilliard Center in Corpus Christi, Texas and aired on the USA Network.

On tap for tonight's episode, new Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn appears following his title win over CM Punk; Cody Rhodes returns following his loss to Randy Orton at Sunday Night's Main Event for a sit-down interview with Michael Cole; Randy Orton, United States Champion Trick Williams and AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix meet in a Men's Money in the Bank qualifying match; Women's United States Champion Jacy Jayne, Jade Cargill and Alexa Bliss compete in a Women's Money in the Bank qualifier; and WWE Tag Team Champions Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga of The MFTs face Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki of Bakusai in a non-title match.
Last week's episode saw Sami Zayn recapture the WWE Championship from CM Punk after a bunch of shenanigans. That is obviously the biggest story heading into this week's episode. I'm sure we'll see plenty revolving around Zayn gloating about his title win, Punk wanting a rematch, folks like Kevin Owens and Johnny Gargano getting around to saying they are owed rightful title shots, and so forth. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if that's the opening promo segment that normally eats up 15-20 minutes and sets up the main event, which I could definitely see being Sami Zayn and Johnny Gargano in a tag team match against CM Punk and Kevin Owens with a "can they coexist?!" air to it, and Gargano taking the pin from Punk in order to set him up for a rematch.
Now that the Money in the Bank qualifiers have been announced, I'm leaning toward Trick Williams on the men's side. Randy Orton has the Cody Rhodes feud to deal with, Trick Williams is already United States champion so he doesn't need it but that doesn't stop them from putting him in there, and Fenix is exactly the type of wrestler WWE would want flying around in a ladder match, but could also take the pin here. I wouldn't rule out Fenix, or even Orton for that matter, but I at least don't think Orton is going to want to bump for this as he is not at all necessary for this year's match.
For the women, Jacy Jayne is already carrying the Women's United States Championship, while Alexa Bliss has plenty going on with Charlotte Flair and Tatum Paxley. Jade Cargill feels like the most straightforward choice to qualify, but Jayne, again, should not be counted out as I just said about Trick. Bliss I see as being in the Orton spot and she'll probably take the pin.
The MFTs against Bakusai being non-title makes me assume Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki could score a win to set up a championship match later. Otherwise, there's not much reason for Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga to lose right after establishing themselves as champions. It's probably a DQ.
Other things to take care of on this show will be examining Damian Priest turning heel on R-Truth last week, Gunther continuing to tell Finn Balor that he's washed up, Charlotte Flair remaining less-than-receptive toward Tatum Paxley, and basically everything else sticking to its normal setup. I don't think we're getting anything crazy this week like last week.

- Sami Zayn's first SmackDown as a two-time Undisputed WWE Champion quickly turned into a fight over who deserved the first shot at him. Zayn told Nick Aldis that future challengers should have to work through the same obstacles he faced before regaining the title. Johnny Gargano believed the championship match belonged to him because of the assistance he previously gave Zayn, while Kevin Owens simply showed up, dropped Gargano with a Stunner and demanded the opportunity himself. Zayn lost his temper with Aldis during the argument, prompting the general manager to make Zayn vs Owens for the title official for later in the night.
- Men's Money in the Bank Triple Threat Qualifying Match: Trick Williams defeated Randy Orton and Rey Fenix by pinfall. Williams picked his moment perfectly at the finish. Orton countered Fenix's springboard into an RKO and appeared ready to capitalize, only for Trick to immediately wipe Orton out with the Trick Shot and steal the pin on Fenix. Williams therefore joins the field for the Men's Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
- Zayn later tried to smooth things over with Gargano, suddenly acknowledging that Johnny deserved a future opportunity. His real pitch was that Gargano would never receive that match if Kevin Owens left Corpus Christi with the championship, essentially encouraging Gargano to make sure that did not happen.
- Tatum Paxley tried to help Alexa Bliss through less conventional means before the women's qualifier, arranging candles that she believed would bring Bliss good luck. Charlotte Flair had little interest in the ritual and accidentally extinguished one that Paxley claimed was supposed to protect against bad luck instead.
- Non-Title Tag Team Match: Bakusai (Shinsuke Nakamura and Kyoki) defeated WWE Tag Team Champions The MFTs (Tama Tonga and Talla Tonga) by disqualification. The champions did not actually take a clean loss, as Haku blatantly struck Nakamura with his walking stick in front of the referee. The MFTs continued the assault after the bell, including Talla Tonga planting Kyoki onto the ring apron with a chokeslam.
- Kevin Owens reflected on returning to the building where he defeated John Cena in his first WWE main roster match and expected to repeat history by taking the WWE Championship from Zayn. Finn Balor questioned the entire situation, pointing out that Owens helped Zayn regain the title and then immediately benefited with a championship opportunity. Balor said he would instead win Money in the Bank if that is what it takes to earn his shot properly.
- Chelsea Green's successful WWE Women's Championship defense brought congratulations from Nick Aldis before Danhausen appeared with the general manager's phone and relayed some of the messages he had received. Tiffany Stratton revealed she will be entering a Money in the Bank qualifier, while Green liked the idea of eventually using the briefcase to chase another championship. Nikki Bella then entered the discussion and told Green she has no intention of going through a qualifier at all, arguing that her status as a legend and icon already justifies a championship opportunity.
- Michael Cole sat down with Cody Rhodes to revisit Cody's loss to Randy Orton at Sunday Night's Main Event. Cody did not deny that hesitation cost him when he chose not to Punt Orton, nor did he attempt to excuse the defeat. Cole brought up how many people who once celebrated Cody's rise to the top have since turned against him. Cody admitted he may have expected too much from some of those relationships, but he refused to view his approach to being champion as a mistake. As far as Orton is concerned, Rhodes said he knows what decision he will make if he is presented with that same opportunity again.
- Elsewhere backstage, B-Fab and Michin informed Jade Cargill that they have their sights set on the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship. Cargill encouraged them while keeping her own attention on Money in the Bank and the possibility of eventually working her way back to the WWE Women's Championship.
- Women's Money in the Bank Triple Threat Qualifying Match: Women's United States Champion Jacy Jayne defeated Alexa Bliss and Jade Cargill by pinfall. The closing sequence revolved around each woman stealing the previous one's opportunity. Bliss hit Sister Abigail on Jayne, but Cargill stopped the referee from reaching three. Cargill then hit Jaded on Bliss and looked ready to win herself until Jayne knocked Jade away and covered Bliss before Cargill could recover. Jayne advances to the Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match.
- Giulia's interview concerning next week's qualifier against Charlotte Flair and Lash Legend was interrupted by Legend and Nia Jax. Legend confidently predicted she would advance, leading Giulia to step directly into her face and threaten to kick her teeth out.
- Trick Williams celebrated his own qualification with Lil Yachty and continued discussing their issues with Baron Corbin. When Sami Zayn crossed their path, Trick again called him "Gingerbread." Zayn demanded respect for being a two-time WWE champion, only for Williams to tell him that he hopes the reign lasts long enough for Trick to eventually win the briefcase and cash it in on him.
- Damian Priest addressed his recent attack on R-Truth and made it clear there was no misunderstanding or regret involved. Priest said Truth refused to recognize that he had changed, and rather than fight the accusation that he has become a bad man, Priest has decided to embrace it.
- Undisputed WWE Championship Match: Sami Zayn (c) defeated Kevin Owens by pinfall to retain the title. Zayn's earlier conversation with Gargano paid off when Johnny and Candice LeRae became involved in the closing stages. LeRae attacked Owens while the referee was occupied, and Gargano later saved Zayn by putting the champion's foot on the bottom rope after a Stunner. Owens managed to fight through their interference and even sent Zayn crashing through the announce table, but CM Punk then appeared and struck Owens with the WWE Championship while the official was again distracted. Zayn eventually recovered enough to land another Helluva Kick and retain. Punk was not finished, returning after the decision to hit Zayn with the GTS before doing the same to Owens and leaving both men down as SmackDown went off the air.
- Two more Money in the Bank qualifiers were announced for next week: CM Punk vs Finn Balor vs Gunther on the men's side, and Charlotte Flair vs Giulia vs Lash Legend for the women.
