Last month, it was revealed that Ruby Rose has walked away from Batwoman after just a single season, and it didn't take long for wrestling fans to put Sonya Deville forward as a possible replacement. The CW is looking for an openly gay woman to take on the role, and as Sonya is the first openly gay female WWE Superstar, she certainly fits the bill in that respect.
It just so happens that Sonya is also a legitimate badass, and someone who could bring a lot to a role like this one. When we spoke to the SmackDown Superstar, we asked if she's auditioned for the Batwoman role yet, and she responded: "In progress. I'm working on it. [Laughs] I'll say that."
That's rather cryptic, but what does she think WWE would make of her taking on a commitment as big as this one? "I think they would be on board, but yes, very early stages right now." As for whether she could balance WWE and the DC series, Sonya adds: "What I do in the ring with WWE is my priority right now, and it's my #1. But, people film movies all the time, and television roles, while working for WWE, so nothing is impossible."
As you may have heard, rather than recasting Ruby Rose's Kate Kane, the new Batwoman will be Ryan Wilder (a character created for the series). That's something that excites Sonya. "I think that's always cool because Ruby obviously did a great job with the character, and you don't ever want to be a different version of somebody else. You want to be a new version of yourself, and so I think that would be an amazing opportunity to create a new role and bring something very different to it, you know?"
You can find more from Sonya on her Batwoman aspirations over at ComicBookMovie.com, but it definitely sounds like momentum is beginning to build in her favour...
