With the Royal Rumble set to take place next month, we'll soon have a much better idea of what to expect from WWE as we start heading down the Road to WrestleMania.
There are already a lot of conflicting rumours about plans for the Show of Show's two main events, but WrestlingNews.co has now weighed in with a report we're sure you'll find very interesting. According to the site, if Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson - who still isn't signed up for WrestleMania - doesn't return, then Cody Rhodes will challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal title.
Yes, the Universal Championship, not the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.
While Reigns holds both the WWE and Universal titles, they remain separate championships, and the latter is the one he's held for a record-breaking number of days. Something is clearly going to happen in the coming months that will split the titles, with the idea being that RAW and SmackDown will once again have their own world titles heading into the summer.
That should be welcomed by fans, especially as Reigns is essentially a part-timer these days. So, what's the plan for the WWE Championship?
Apparently, that will be defended on WrestleMania Night One, with Seth Rollins either facing Drew McIntyire or Rhodes if The Rock returns to battle Reigns on Night Two.
It's an interesting idea, though we're not sure how WWE will sell Rollins vs. Rhodes again, especially when the latter returned to WWE and beat Seth repeatedly before being sidelined with an injury. While his comeback was derailed, it culminating with him finally becoming WWE Champion makes perfect sense, especially as that the title which always alluded his father, WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes.
Cody actually "returned" to RAW last night, and you can check out what he had to say below.
