Can you imagine Abyss vs. The Undertaker?
That could’ve been an actual match at WrestleMania 23 as the former TNA World Heavyweight Champion revealed that WWE officials had pitched such a high profile match to him. Speaking on the Getting Over podcast, the 51-year-old revealed that he was having talks with WWE and the company actually pitched him the huge match during contract negotiations.
“There were a couple times that we had conversations, and they always went really well. You know, my thing at the time—I was with TNA since the beginning. I was there from the start, and that made it for me personally extremely hard to part and to leave.”
It came down to loyalty for Abyss. The TNA Hall of Famer had been with the company for over five years at that point and there was a sense of pride about being a TNA Original. Plus, with guys like Kurt Angle, Sting, and AJ Styles on the roster, Abyss just wasn’t interested in the proposed match.
“I felt like I was one of the cornerstones of the company, along with AJ Styles, the Samoa Joes, Jeff Jarrett obviously, and Sting and Kurt Angle. So I felt an extreme sense of loyalty. I just had no interest. I was all about TNA at that time.”
Now the rumor of Abyss being offered a match against the Undertaker is nothing new. In fact, Tommy Dreamer originally spilled the beans on Abyss and WWE having these talks, but the ECW legend came to a different conclusion that it was “stage fright”, though Abyss waved off such claims.
I’ll always be a “what if” when it comes to Abyss because he was a fascinating character at one point in his TNA career. It helps that Abyss can go in between the ropes, so an Undertaker vs. Abyss match in 2007 had loads of potential. It’s a shame that match never came to fruition as Abyss could’ve been something special in WWE, but at least he had a memorable career in TNA Wrestling. He wrestled for TNA/Impact for nearly two decades before getting put into the company’s Hall of Fame in 2019.
Currently, the former Abyss enjoys life working as a WWE producer and he was just revealed as one a surprise DLC download for the latest WWE 2K video game, so technically, if fans wanted Abyss vs. The Undertaker then they could make the match on WWE 2K25.
