The rumours were true, as last night's SmackDown ended with the long-awaited return of former Divas Champion AJ Lee. After Becky Lynch cost her husband, CM Punk, the World Heavyweight Championship, Lee wasted no time in taking out "The Man."

A furious Lynch—along with her other half, Seth Rollins—were forced to leave with their tails tucked between their legs, while Lee seemed to indicate that she's coming after the Women's Intercontinental Championship.

Since the show ended, multiple sources are reporting that this is not a one-off return for Lee ahead of what's expected to be a Mixed Tag Team Match at the upcoming Wrestlepalooza PLE.

In fact, she's reportedly signed a multi-year contract with WWE, meaning we can expect to see a lot more of the fan-favourite multi-time champion moving forward. Lee was a huge part of transforming the underappreciated Divas division into the widely respected Women's roster, but left before she could benefit from the results of her hard work.

Now, the stage is set for Lee to compete in plenty of classic matches and hopefully hold more championship gold.

Here are some highlights from SmackDown, as Lee made her long-awaited return to WWE.

WWE has also shared footage of Lee basking in the adoration of the Chicago crowd after SmackDown went off the air.

Triple H later posted one of his now-iconic backstage photos with Lee and Punk, along with the moment she signed a new contract with the company for the first time in over a decade.
