Before he was injured by Drew McIntyre in this year's men's Royal Rumble match, the plan had been for CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins to headline WrestleMania with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line.
It's no secret that Punk has always wanted to main event the Show of Shows, so the fact the bout didn't happen was a major blow to him and WWE fans.
Having stole the show this year in a heated feud with McIntyre, WWE plans to pit Punk against Rollins on the first RAW on Netflix. So, what's the plan for the Best in the World at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas this April?
Well, while an opponent hasn't been revealed just yet, the idea is reportedly for Punk to be involved in a world title match. Whether that's Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship or Cody Rhodes' Undisputed WWE Championship remains to be seen.
Here's what the @WrestleVotes insider revealed:
"I’ve heard so many things on Punk, especially as of late with the Roman [Reigns] stuff being thrown in there. But the one main factor that I’ve heard almost all year is they want him [Punk] to be involved in a World Title match. I don’t know how the puzzle pieces are going to fit, but they want him at the top."
"I don’t think it’ll be with Cody [Rhodes], so that’s one title match out the window. Does he fit into the other one? I’m going to say yes at this point. I don’t think it’ll be Gunther, Bill [Apter], that’s the thing. I don’t think it’s Punk and Gunther. So if they want him involved with the title, then what do you do with Gunther?"
Punk's return to WWE being capped off by his winning the world title in the main event of WrestleMania would be nothing short of epic.
Earlier this year, the Second City Saint shared what he'd been told about plans for him at WrestleMania XL before his injury. "The plan I think was going to be Seth and I. I believe so. Again, I came in and said I’m not asking questions. Yeah, there’s history there, there’s story there."
"It changed a lot you know because I came back in and I told Triple H, 'Look man, I’m not here to steal anybody’s spotlight, take anybody’s main event,' like I get it," Punk continued. "I was p***ed 10 years ago when I had to sit through Rock/Cena two years in a row and now everything’s different."
"Mania’s two nights now so more people get that opportunity and for me it was always just about the booker. In my head, you cannot become main event talent unless you work with other main event talent," he concluded.
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
