When Rhea Ripley was injured and forced to vacate the WWE Women's World Championship last summer, a Battle Royal was held to decide the new champion.
Becky Lynch ultimately picked up the win, a decision met with a surprisingly mixed response. That was less an indication of Lynch's declining popularity and more a response to WWE putting the title back on the veteran Superstar instead of using that opportunity to help create a new star.
Liv Morgan later defeated Lynch for the WWE Women's World Championship at King and Queen of the Ring and failed to recapture it during a Steel Cage match on RAW. That marked The Man's final appearance in WWE and, as far as we're aware, she still hasn't signed a new deal.
Lynch was said to be keen on securing a big money deal which looked to be the biggest contract in the history of women's wrestling; that's a huge ask, particularly with so many up-and-coming female Superstars in WWE who are now starting to gain bigger fanbases than those who helped usher in this new era for women in the first place.
During a recent podcast appearance, Lynch reiterated that she's still part of the WWE family but confirmed that, since taking a hiatus last May to focus on projects in Hollywood, she remains undecided about what her in-ring future looks like.
"I don’t know the answers to these questions. I genuinely don’t. I’m being so vague, and I don’t mean to be in any way cagey, but I feel like I have a great mind for wrestling, a great love for it, and so it’s always going to be there in my heart, and in my head, it’s part of my family. It’s the reason I have my family so it’s so important to me. I just don’t know what that looks like in the future."
"I genuinely don’t have any answers for you because I don’t know. I think life continues to surprise me in wonderful ways recently. You can make all these plans, but sometimes things don’t go the way you intended but in the long run, something works out better than you expected. I feel like that’s been my whole run."
While it's widely believed Lynch will make her WWE return at some point in 2025, it feels a lot like her career may be winding down as she sets out to establish herself outside the company.
