The new WWE: Unreal documentary series on Netflix has peeled back the curtain on what happens behind the scenes in the company. Some fans love that level of unprecedented access, while others feel WWE has well and truly killed kayfabe.
A big part of the show is devoted to CM Punk and Triple H's surprising friendship, and how that culminated with the Second City Saint finally getting to main event WrestleMania in Las Vegas earlier this year.
At one point, the Game is shown giving Punk a passionate pep talk ahead of the match with Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns. "I know what this means to you. You are f*cking CM Punk, you’ve always been a main event guy, always! F***ing go out there and do it!" Triple H told him, prompting Punk to reply, "Thank you, I don't get here without you. I appreciate you, thank you for the opportunity."
The camera crew caught up with Punk after the main event ended. "It’s everything I wanted since I wore Doc Martens in the ring because I couldn’t afford wrestling boots," a clearly emotional Punk said. "It was everything I wanted since I was a little kid. That’s all I ever wanted to do. I just did it. I f***ing did it."
WWE: Unreal also confirms that the original plan for the Triple Threat Match was for the Best in the World to win the match. Even after Paul Heyman's betrayal, the idea was for Punk to overcome that and go on to end his first WrestleMania main event with a win.
Rollins ultimately won, of course, and that might have been best for the stories that have since come out of the Show of Shows. As for Punk, he'll next challenge Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of SummerSlam this weekend.
