During last night's episode of RAW, John Cena defeated Dominik Mysterio to finally win the Intercontinental Championship and become a WWE Grand Slam Champion.
He'll presumably defend the title at Saturday Night's Main Event in his last match, and before being confronted by Mysterio, Cena made a huge announcement for the upcoming PLE. Aside from his send-off, the show will feature several exhibition matches pitting WWE main roster Superstars against NXT's rising stars.
According to Bryan Alvarez, the idea came from Cena himself. "NXT wrestlers getting matches on Saturday Night's Main Event was a John Cena call, he loved his time at the WWE Performance Center," the insider shared.
Cena visited the Performance Center twice last month and was clearly impressed by what he saw. It was during his second visit that he heaped praise on the talent he saw there when he wrote on social media, "Being coachable can open our minds to learn. Thank you to all the superstars at the WWE PC for sharing with me different perspectives of our business."
"I spent the week digesting their feedback [and] was grateful to be able to return today for another chance to learn [and] share wisdom."
WWE has yet to announce which WWE and NXT stars will face off at Saturday Night's Main Event, but Cena will face the winner of "The Last Time Is Now" tournament. During last night's RAW, Rusev and Sheamus advanced after scoring wins over Damian Priest and Shinsuke Nakamura.
Celebrating his Intercontinental title win earlier today, Cena wrote, "Thank you, Boston. It meant so much to be able, for one last time, to be allowed an opportunity to do what I love, in a place I love, surrounded by those I love. Our performances are only meaningful if YOU, the audience, invest in us and decide they are."
"The smile on my face and awe in my eyes in this small clip is an honest show of grateful disbelief & appreciation for all you’ve ever invested in me. Last night meant more than I can ever express. Thank you, Boston," he concluded.
