Jey Uso is majorly over in WWE and, in that respect at least, is living up to his "Main Event" nickname. Some believe his entrance is more over than he is, though, and have cast doubt on whether he was the right choice to win the Royal Rumble and headline WrestleMania.
Talking to CBS Sports, the former Intercontinental Champion acknowledged, "This is do or die for me. I feel like I am doubted a lot. A lot of people are doubting me right now, Uce. I'm not supposed to be in this position. I know that. They know that. But I'm going to shut them all up."
Uso has already fallen short while challenging Gunther for his World Heavyweight Championship. The babyface dethroning the formidable Austrian at the Show of Shows feels awfully similar to when Sami Zayn beat the heel for his Intercontinental title on the Grandest Stage of Them All, leaving fans to wonder how WWE plans to tell a compelling story involving these two.
However, it's what they can do in the ring that seems to be getting Jey most excited.
"I think he's the best in-ring performer," Uso said of Gunther. "There is something about him. He carries that energy. He's intimidating, strong, big and heavy. But I need to get through this mountain so I can prove it to myself and to the world. I'm trying to be world heavyweight champ."
Of course, there's extra pressure on the multi-time Tag Team Champion because, at last year's WrestleMania, he and twin brother Jimmy went one-on-one in a match that was widely panned by fans.
"I always thought we put on great matches. If you look at it, we had great matches with The Wyatt Family, The Shield, The New Day. Now, I feel like I've had a couple of good matches but not ones that stick in people's minds," Uso said. "This is redemption time on the big stage. The pressure is on."
"I'm about to have 100,000 people out there Yeeting in one motion," he said of this year's WrestleMania. "No one is doing that. We're going to have fun."
This is going to be the biggest match of Jey's career and one that will see him either sink or swim. Whether he'll main event WrestleMania remains to be seen, especially as there are many potential matches vying for that spot.
