In less than 2 weeks, WWE will have three premium live events over two days with NXT Great American Bash, followed by Saturday Night's Main Event 40 on Saturday, July 12, 2025, and WWE Evolution on Sunday, July 13th.
This meant WWE had to announce some matches for those shows, with three (with an implied fourth) being set for Evolution. However, Saturday Night's Main Event only received one new addition to the lineup on the June 30th edition of Monday Night Raw.
While there was a segment dedicated to Gunther cutting a promo on Bill Goldberg—his opponent for Saturday Night's Main Event as they clash for the World Heavyweight Championship—once he was done making fun of his challenger, The Ring General was interrupted by Seth Rollins, who came to the ring with "The Oracle" Paul Heyman and his new custom Money in the Bank briefcase, teasing the idea that he could cash in on Gunther.
This is when CM Punk then ran into the fray, attacking Rollins, who ran off into the crowd to escape.
Punk pushed down Gunther to help add more tension between those two that has been building over time, and it appeared the segment was over, only for it to be shown that LA Knight had made his way to the spot where Rollins was hiding. Knight jumped The Visionary from behind and the two fought in the concessions area of the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, until Rollins was able to escape yet again.
Heyman would go on to say that Rollins had then taken a private jet home already, leaving early, as well as letting Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed fend for themselves in the tag team main event against Sami Zayn and Penta (which they won, so that wasn't a factor).
Nevertheless, Rollins can't hide forever, as he was announced to be booked for a singles match against LA Knight for Saturday Night's Main Event.
This is a standard grudge match with no gimmicks, stipulations, or anything on the line. It is merely a means for Knight to get his hands on Rollins and to continue their feud, which has been a focal point since they crossed paths in the Money in the Bank ladder match and since Knight and Rollins' crew have been interfering in each other's matches and fighting with each other sporadically.
This now brings the Saturday Night's Main Event card to these two matches, with room for more to be announced either on SmackDown or at some point next week:
- LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins
- World Heavyweight Championship Match: Gunther (c) vs. Goldberg
