Ahead of WrestleMania 42, Jacob Heyman sat down with his father, WWE Hall of Famer Paul Heyman, to discuss his role at this weekend's Showcase of the Immortals.
Heyman will almost certainly accompany Brock Lesnar to the ring when he faces Oba Femi. He'll also likely play a role in Seth Rollins' match with Gunther and Logan Paul, Austin Theory, and IShowSpeed's battle with The Usos and LA Knight.
However, none of those matches is the main event of either night.
Jacob wondered whether not being in that spot has been bothering his father. "Yeah, it pisses me off," Heyman admitted. "I don’t think it’s a big secret that everything was driving this year to be Seth Rollins versus Roman Reigns, and then that fell apart. And then it was going to be Bron Breaker versus CM Punk, and that fell apart."
"So I was in line to be a part of the main event this year, and fate intervened, not once, but even twice," he continued. "I’d be less than candid if I didn’t admit I take great pride in the fact that the most heavily anticipated match this year is what I call the real main event of WrestleMania, Brock Lesnar versus Oba Femi. But history won’t record that as a main event."
"It’s inspiring to me. Just makes me work harder for next year’s WrestleMania main event, and to make sure that I have more than one or two contingency plans in place," Heyman said, explaining why he's not dwelling on the disappointment. "It’s rarefied air, and I live for that rarefied air. I’m not good at a lot of things in my life, but I’m real good at that."
As a reminder, these are the nine main events that Heyman has previously been part of:
- WrestleMania 31 (Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns)
- WrestleMania 34 (Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns)
- WrestleMania 36 (Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre)
- WrestleMania 37 (Roman Reigns vs. Edge vs. Daniel Bryan)
- WrestleMania 38 (Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar)
- WrestleMania 39 (Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes)
- WrestleMania 40 Night 1 (Roman Reigns and The Rock vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins)
- WrestleMania 40 Night 2 (Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes)
- WrestleMania 41 (Seth Rollins vs. CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns)
It's interesting to think about what might have been had The Vision not been plagued by injuries. Reigns vs. Rollins would have been a great way to follow last year's WrestleMania main event, while Breakker vs. Punk would have almost certainly marked the former NXT Champion's crowning moment by winning the world title on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
