Saturday will feature two big championship matches on the upcoming pay-per-view. Thus far, four matches are set for the card. As always, these are just my predictions with no insider knowledge. Let’s get started with the first match:
WWE World Heavyweight Championship match: Gunther (c) vs. Goldberg
This match could go several different ways. Ideally, Gunther will beat Goldberg and he’ll have an emotional send off with fireworks and everyone crying. But there’s a real possibility that Goldberg could win this match.
Gunther is NOT keeping this title for long. It’s certainly going to Seth Rollins. One scenario I can see is Goldberg beating Gunther and Seth’s lackeys attack him and then he cashes in. The other is Goldberg wins and relinquishes the belt. That’s happened several times in the past.
The build to this match has been quite lackluster as this Goldberg’s final match. Yet, WWE just threw it out there randomly without any rhyme or reason. That’s why it doesn’t feel like Goldberg’s final match and there’s a strong possibility of Goldberg vs. Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight title at Summerslam.
But, WWE has been teasing Gunther/Rollins for a good minute. After he has his car crash match with Goldberg, I can see Seth cashing in and winning. I’ll give it to Gunther, but I would be surprised if he leaves Saturday Night’s Main Event still a world champion.
Winner: Gunther
United States Championship match: Solo Sikoa (c) vs. Jimmy Uso
Solo. There’s just no chance in hell that Jimmy is winning here, especially not before Fatu. WWE hasn’t done much with Jimmy to make him a credible singles star, which is why he doesn’t feel like a threat to any major singles championship. This is just the way to get Jacob and Jimmy closer to working together, while giving Solo a win.
Winner: Solo Sikoa
Drew McIntyre vs. Randy Orton
I don’t know what they’re doing with Randy Orton and Drew McIntyre going forward. Sadly, WWE scrapped Drew and started a faction to go against Roman Reigns and his Bloodline. Honestly, Drew feels lost in the shuffle these days. So does Orton. With Summerslam two weeks away, I wouldn’t be surprised if this match led to a rematch at the big August show. This feels like either a disqualification or a heel wins because of shenanigans.
Then again, Orton is coming off of a big loss so WWE may want to give him a win to recover from that. They can still come up with a reason for these two to have a match at Summerslam, with the hopes of Drew winning at the big show. This is kind of backwards, but if written well then there’s a way to make this mini feud compelling. I’ll go with Orton, though I wouldn’t be surprised if McIntyre wins.
Winner: Randy Orton
LA Knight vs. Seth Rollins
I see LA Knight winning. As I previously stated, Seth Rollins is likely winning the world title very soon. WWE typically likes to set up future challengers by the Money in the Bank winners losing to justify a world title match down the line. I don’t see LA Knight winning a world title anytime soon, but I can definitely see him hanging around the main event scene for a good while.
On the other hand, WWE may want to keep Seth Rollins looking strong. Seth Rollins hasn’t lost a singles match since the Netflix debut episode back in January. I imagine WWE wants to give Seth’s first singles loss since his heel turn to someone like Roman Reigns or even CM Punk. With Gunther dropping the belt and Rollins still feuding with Roman and CM Punk, I imagine that adding Knight to the mix would be a bit much. Though I can see Roman and CM Punk vs. Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed at Summerslam.
So many directions…but I’ll go with Seth winning here. I think his destiny is with either Gunther or Roman at Summerslam, not LA Knight.
Winner: Seth Rollins
