Shawn Michaels Turned Down A Match Against AJ Styles At WRESTLEMANIA 33

WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels has revealed in a new interview that he was given the chance to go head to head with AJ Styles at WrestleMania, but declined. Why? You can find out after the jump...

AJ Styles has made no secret of the fact that his dream opponent is Shawn Michaels. He's not the only WWE Superstar to have said the same thing since The Heartbreak Kid retired, of course, but Michaels seems determined that he will never come out of retirement no matter who lays down the challenge or how much money is on the table. He's done.

However, during a recent chat on the Sam Roberts Podcast, Michaels confessed that he was actually approached by WWE for a match with Styles at this year's WrestleMania when the company didn't have an opponent for him. Unfortunately, not even stepping into the ring with The Phenomenal One was enough to convince Michaels to return to the squared circle!

"I guess I’m breaking something with you and I don’t even know if I should, but I could have had that match. They didn’t have an opponent for AJ at WrestleMania. I said that I hadn’t been asked because I hadn’t — but then I was. I said, I wish that young man was here 10 years ago, man. I honestly do. I think he’s very talented."

The fact this match isn't happening is obviously extremely disappointing, but it just goes to show how highly WWE now views Styles if they were looking for an opponent of this calibre for him. As of right now, the plan is for him to take on Shane McMahon on the Grandest Stage of Them All, but it will be hard to watch that match and not wonder what might have been...
