When renegotiating the television rights for Raw, SmackDown and NXT, WWE settled on an idea with NBCUniversal to host quarterly editions of WWE Saturday Night's Main Event on NBC and Peacock. The first of this new partnership took place a few weeks back on December 14, 2024, featuring the crowning of the first-ever Women's United States Championship, Cody Rhodes defending the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens and more.
On today's episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, two matches were made official for the next edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, which will take place at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
Sheamus defeated Ludwig Kaiser by pinfall in what was originally just a regular singles match. However, the commentary team (Michael Cole and Pat McAfee) made it a point to say that by beating Kaiser, The Celtic Warrior had effectively made himself the most viable No. 1 contender for the Intercontinental Championship.
Current champion Bron Breakker was ringside watching the match from the crowd. He and Sheamus had a verbal altercation to help build some hype for that match, and it was later made official, with Sheamus getting yet another shot at the Intercontinental Championship at Saturday Night's Main Event.
Sheamus has been pursuing this championship for many years, as it is the one title that is holding him back from being able to be classified as a Grand Slam Champion, as he has already checked off winning a world title, the United States Championship, and the tag team titles.
Also on the card will be Gunther against Jey Uso for the World Heavyweight Championship.
The world heavyweight champion came out for an in-ring promo where he talked about how the rest of the roster just wasn't impressing him, only to be interrupted by Jey, who was more than ready to say that he had put Drew McIntyre and everyone else behind him, outright challenging Gunther for a title match.
Gunther laughed it off, but accepted the challenge, calling Jey a funny and entertaining guy, but that he would expose him as just being a really talented tag team wrestler when they step in the ring, and he'll beat him just like he's done previously when the two fought for the Intercontinental Championship during Gunther's historic record-breaking run with that belt.
So far, those are the only two matches announced for Saturday Night's Main Event, but we can expect to hear at least one, if not two or more other fights added to the lineup before January 25th comes around.
