At Clash in Paris on Saturday, Becky Lynch cost CM Punk the World Heavyweight Championship when she attacked him in the closing moments of the match. With that, her husband, Seth Rollins, was able to retain the title.
Last night's RAW saw the Second City Saint confront the Women's Intercontinental Champion, who repeatedly slapped him as a sneering Rollins watched. Punk vowed to make them both pay for the actions, though he's obviously going to need a female tag team partner to make that a reality.
Who will it be? As we write this, the prevailing theory is a returning AJ Lee (a fan-favourite former Divas Champion and Punk's wife). She's not wrestled in over a decade, but with the Best in the World confirming he'll be in Chicago for SmackDown on Friday—which is where he and AJ live—it's feeling like a strong possibility.
Many fans also believe that Saraya/Paige will make her WWE return to team with Punk. They worked together on FOX's short-lived WWE Backstage show and were in AEW together.
Other, less exciting possibilities include Rhea Ripley and Bayley; those ultimately seem far more realistic, and some fans are even throwing out Cora Jade's name as a contender, given her friendship with Punk (WWE could have re-hired her after she was released, but we wouldn't bank on it).
Quizzed on whether AJ be eager to join him in WWE, Punk previously said "Yeah, I would say it definitely did. It’s more of a workload thing for her. She is very busy. I’m not trying to not talk about it, but I’m also trying to temper people’s expectations. If she wraps up some stuff that she’s working on and she has the time and she feels like dipping her toe back in or jumping back in the pool, she’ll let us know."
"Her and I are similar in the regard that we’re out of time. You could pluck us both off from where we started and put us in any kind of era. I definitely think she would thrive here," he added. "She thrived back then when the focus wasn’t women, and now, this past week, every single television show we had opened with a women’s match and main evented with a women’s match. You can’t tell me she wouldn’t fit in there."
