SummerSlam is fast approaching, and the rumour mill has been churning out some exciting claims about what we can expect from WWE's next PLE and the biggest party of the summer.
Today, we have updates on the main events of the two-night show, as well as a huge potential spoiler about plans for a surprise return and championship win. There are also updates on other bouts, and some big changes coming to RAW and SmackDown's commentary teams.
Finally, we have more on Goldberg's surprisingly controversial retirement, and it sounds like WWE had something bigger planned...but chose to prioritise hurting AEW.
You can read through these latest WWE rumours below:
- Dave Meltzer maintains that WWE always planned to do an injury angle with Seth Rollins at Saturday Night's Main Event. The idea was supposedly for SummerSlam Night 1 to be main evented by CM Punk vs. Gunter for the World Heavyweight Championship, with Rollins cashing in on the Second City Saint.
- The cash in is still said to be on the table, with Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship scheduled for the SummerSlam Night 2 main event.
- The insider also claims that WWE originally wanted Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss to compete at SummerSlam in a singles match, only for creative plans to change when fans responded positively to them as a tag team.
- Meltzer has also confirmed the obvious about us seeing Roman Reigns & Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker & Bronson Reed at the PLE next month. The Women's Intercontinental Championship match featuring Becky Lynch vs. Lyra Valkyria is said to be scheduled for Saturday.
- A six-team Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match was scheduled at one point (presumably for SmackDown's Tag Team Championships), but it's not clear whether that's still planned.
- PW Insider has learned that announcer Joe Tessitore will move to RAW, with Michael Cole heading to SmackDown during football season due to the former's commitments elsewhere during that time.
- Fightful has learned that Jimmy Uso will likely be moved to the RAW roster soon, now that his wife, Naomi, is part of the brand as its Women's World Champion.
- The site also claims that WWE's priority with Goldberg's retirement match at Saturday Night's Main Event was to have it run against the AEW All In Texas event. However, the WWE Hall of Famer was offered "a legit retirement run" at one point.
- We haven't seen Omos on WWE programming for a while, but @WrestleVotes believes that after his stint in Pro Wrestling NOAH, the company is considering having him work in AAA in Mexico next.
