Sami Zayn has defeated Carmelo Hayes to win back the WWE Men's United States Championship on the March 27, 2026 episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown.
How did this go down tonight, what led to this, and what could be on the horizon? Let's break it all down!
How We Got Here:
Sami Zayn was United States champion for just shy of 50 days from August 29, 2025 until October 17th when he lost the belt to Ilja Dragunov. During that time frame, it was arguably a distraction from the idea of Zayn winning a world title, with WWE (for some reason) perpetually abandoning that storyline and then coming back to it at least once or twice per year.
Zayn had kept up the United States Open Challenge, and Dragunov decided to continue it, ultimately losing the belt to Carmelo Hayes on December 19, 2025.
For the past 92+ days, Hayes has also continued the open challenge, defending on a near weekly basis for the past three months against all comers.
Lately, Zayn has been getting more and more frustrated over his losses, and was told by SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis on tonight's episode that while Trick Williams was booked for WrestleMania, there wasn't yet a spot for Zayn, as championships need to be defended as a priority. Clearly, that inspired Zayn to go after a title.
Match Details:
Trick Williams was ringside to watch the match, which was a game back-and-forth contest all throughout until the very end until he decided to snatch the belt and start walking off as if he deserved to just steal it. Throughout the confusion over that, Zayn was able to capitalize and hit a Helluva Kick for the win, following up from Williams inadvertently striking Hayes.
Personal Reactions & What Happens Next?:
It's a shame to see the belt taken off Melo. He's a great talent that hopefully won't get lost in the shuffle. It's also a shame this is clearly not Plan A for anyone involved, including Sami Zayn. However, with all things considered on this Road to WrestleMania being an absolute mess with injuries and plans changing, WWE backed themselves into a corner where a Triple Threat match between these three is perhaps the only way they could get on the card. Assuming that happens, there's no way the match is bad. I'd personally rather have Williams hold the title than for it to go back to Zayn, but let's see where they go for The Grandest Stage of Them All, first.
Update: It was then announced after a commercial break that Zayn will defend the title against Williams at WrestleMania, without Hayes being added to the mix (at least, not yet)
