While fans had hoped that John Cena vs. CM Punk might be in the works for Money in the Bank next month, that's not the direction WWE is currently heading in. Instead, it seems the Undisputed WWE Champion will compete in a tag team match.
According to PWInsider.com, the current idea is for musician Travis Scott to be put front and centre...for the third time in a Cena segment since the 17-time world champion turned heel.
The site explains that there's a "belief in creative circles that musician Travis Scott will be available for Money in the Bank." The current plan is for "[Travis] and Cena teaming in either a tag match or six-man tag of some sort."
One pitch would be for for Logan Paul to team with Cena and Scott in a six-man tag team match pitting the celebrity heel trio against Cody Rhodes, World Heavyweight Champion Jey Uso, and Jimmy Uso.
It's cautioned that while "one would think that would mean Cody Rhodes would be on the opposing side...whether WWE goes in that direction remains to be seen."
So far, Scott was there for Cena's heel turn (alongside the ever-absent Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and helped him defeat Rhodes at WrestleMania...much to the chagrin of most fans. Still, throwing him into the mix alongside Paul would get Cena a lot of heel heat.
Has his heel run been a disappointment? That's up for debate. It has been a tad one-note in terms of how he's frequently vented his frustrations on the fans who he feels have betrayed him, and it's beginning to feel like this might be a waste of Cena's final year in WWE as his retirement tour rolls on.
For what it's worth, Cena has had nothing but good things to say about Paul:
"Logan Paul, Logan Paul’s a stud. I texted him right away after his match. I’m like, 'Dude, you are innovative.' From his entrance to holding a drone to thinking on another level of like, I’m gonna swing big and try something different. I thought that was dope."
"Then his performance, he’s doing stuff that I couldn’t do at peak physical condition. So regardless of if you like him or you hate him, he’s doing athletic moves that are better or as good as any of the 'wrestlers' out there, any of the trained wrestlers."
Stay tuned for updates as we have them.
