WWE is back with their latest special: Saturday Night’s Main Event. Surprisingly, the show has only four matches. There’s a strong possibility of a fifth match, but the company has yet to give an indication on what that could be. Nevertheless, this feels like a star-studded show that could result in the best Saturday Night’s Main Event if done correctly. Let’s get started with the first match.
World Heavyweight Championship: Jey Uso (c) vs. Logan Paul
I guess there’s a slim chance that Logan Paul can win this. They did tease Gunther vs. Logan Paul all the way back in January. But I just don’t see it happening at all. If this was Seth Rollins then the choice would be harder as I can genuinely see them putting it back on him, but there’s just no momentum going with Paul. He leaves, comes back for a pay-per-view or two, then disappears.
Add in the controversy going on outside of the company (though to be fair, WWE knew what they were getting when they hired this guy) and this is not the right time to give Logan Paul the World Heavyweight Championship. I don’t see Jey having a long title reign. At best, he’ll keep it until Summerslam. At worst, he’ll drop it at Money in the Bank. But Jey will at least get a couple of wins in before doing so. He’s likely dropping it to Rollins. Giving it back to Gunther doesn’t make much sense, though it would be fun to see a Gunther/Seth Rollins feud.
Winner: Jey Uso
John Cena vs. R-Truth
It’s interesting that this isn’t just a title match. Granted, Truth doesn’t particularly deserve a championship match because he's essentially a comedy jobber, but I also don’t see the point in Cena having a big time non-title match. On the surface, this seems like an easy pick, but I do genuinely think that Truth has a shot at winning here.
I suspect that Cody Rhodes is returning soon. I think Cody is likely to interfere and help R-Truth beat John Cena. Hell, I can see Orton helping Truth, though that’s less likely since Truth is the man that screwed him over at Backlash. But I don’t think WWE would allow Cena to lose to a comedy act like R-Truth.
Giving a champion a non-title win is important; Plus, it would be nice to see Cena get a clean win every once in a while. I like the idea of this feud, even though it’s ridiculous that Cena is R-Truth’s childhood hero. The problem is that this rival hasn’t had enough time to properly develop in order for fans to take Truth seriously. I’m intrigued on how WWE books this match.
Winner: John Cena
Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker vs. CM Punk and Sami Zayn
I wouldn’t be surprised if this was booked as the main event as WWE has done a great job building this feud since WrestleMania. On one hand, Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker SHOULD win this match to establish that they’re the top heels on the RAW brand.
On the other, CM Punk is coming off a major loss to Rollins at WrestleMania. Sami Zayn is mostly treated as an underdog, so though he hasn’t won a match since January, I don’t see WWE necessarily trying to reheat him through this match. Then again, there’s so many possibilities that could go down.
Maybe Sami does finally turn heel and betray Punk. WWE did tease Sami’s desire for the world title and that’s going to be a focal point sooner or later. Sami Zayn vs. Jey Uso could be a fun feud for the summer. If CM Punk and Sami Zayn wins then it does do damage to the new faction as the purpose is to build them up for the first couple of months. If anything, I can see Punk pinning Rollins and a beatdown angle afterwards to get their heat back.
But I suspect that the third member will make his debut tonight. I know there’s been reports that WWE doesn’t have a third member planned, but the heels are currently at a disadvantage since they’re feuding with Jey, Punk, Zayn, and don’t forget Roman Reigns. Another guy is coming. And I feel that guy is going to be Sami Zayn. Maybe it’s too early to turn him heel again, but he doesn’t have much else to do on the babyface side. Maybe Sami Zayn can fight John Cena (if a draft happens), but he’ll likely be in the good hand role if he remains face. I think Saturday’s the right time to pull the trigger.
Winner: CM Punk and Bron Breakker
Steel Cage match: Drew McIntyre vs. Damian Priest
Hmm, I don’t know about this one. I thought their feud would’ve been over at WrestleMania. I don’t know where Drew McIntyre goes. He can slip into a feud with a guy like Randy Orton. I can also see him going back to RAW and fighting Jey Uso. But on Smackdown, with Cena being a heel champion, he’s likely to fight either Aleister Black, Randy Orton, or Jacob Fatu.
Those would be great feuds, but there hasn’t been much indication on where WWE is headed. There could be a case made for McIntyre vs. Cena match due to McIntyre’s character. That could be fun. So I guess McIntyre does have options after all.
I wonder if WWE has Priest down as a potential challenger. The former World Heavyweight Champion wouldn’t win the feud, but it could give him a credibility boost by fighting John Cena for the belt. It’s not a guarantee that Cody is coming back anytime soon, and Priest could make a good opponent for Cena if the story is done correctly. Realistically speaking, the match could go either way.
Winner: Damian Priest
