It's a feud which has been keeping pro wrestling fans hooked since Adam "Edge" Copeland made his AEW debut, and last night's AEW Dynamite saw the former WWE Superstar dethrone his one-time best friend, Christian Cage, to become TNT Champion for the second time.
In a unique move to increase ratings, the "I Quit" match began on Dynamite and continued on Rampage. All manner of weapons were used, including Copeland's nail-laden paddle, "Spike."
With the bout taking place in Toronto, the Maple Leafs' hockey gear soon came into play. So did interference from Nick and Shayna Wayne and Killswitch, though Daniel Garcia and Matt Menard later showed up to help even the odds.
Cage ended up being handcuffed in the corner and was pummelled by the babyfaces before "The Rated-R Superstar" hit the heel with a series of low blows...and Spike!
Copeland then raised the paddle above Cage's head, prompting him to finally declare, "I quit!"
It was a hard-hitting gimmick match which, in something of a change of pace for AEW, actually took place in a building that appeared to boast a sold-out crowd. Tony Khan was smart to build the match around the two Canadians, and we'll be keeping a close eye on the ratings of both shows.
