The WrestleMania main event which saw Cody Rhodes challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship was jam-packed full of surprises.
However, when The Shield's music hit, it's fair to say most of us irrationally thought Jon Moxley (Dean Ambrose in WWE) was about to return to the company dispute being under contract with AEW. Instead, it was only Seth Rollins messing with the Tribal Chief's head, but what does Moxley make of the speculation?
"I was asleep in Japan when that was going on," he tells Sports Illustrated, revealing he was there getting ready for his tag team match with Shota Umino against Jack Perry and Ren Narita. "When I woke up, I had these messages saying, 'I thought you were coming out!' And I was like, 'Coming out where?'"
"It’s cool that people thought it was me," Moxley added. "But I was asleep."
While Rollins and Reigns have remained in WWE, the former WWE Champion has forged his own path in AEW and NJPW. As you might expect, he's proud of everything they've accomplished since first forming The Shield together in 2012.
"What they’ve done, it’s a really cool thing," Moxley said. "We were nobodies. We came in with attitudes, and we pretty much said, 'We’re coming in, f*ck you, and we’re taking this sh*t over.' The more time that passes, the more it becomes evident that we did exactly what we said we were going to do."
"I’m the first guy to hold all three - WWE, AEW, and IWGP. It feels so humbling to be put in this position," he continued. "It’s a different world with the IWGP title, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. So I’m going to storm the f*cking castle."
"Nothing lasts forever. You can’t take anything to the grave with you. One day you’re giving everything back to the universe, and the world keeps spinning. It could last three weeks, it could last three years–but to be in this position, it means as much to me as anything I’ve ever had in wrestling."
Moxley has accomplished a lot outside of WWE, but with Vince McMahon now gone, we can't help but wonder whether he'd be open to returning there. However, given his love of deathmatches and competing in Japan, he may still be a poor fit for the sports entertainment giant.
Reigns is expected to take the next few months off, while Rollins is sidelined with a knee injury after pulling double (well, technically triple) duty at WrestleMania earlier this month.
