Billie Starkz isn’t thrilled over Athena and Mercedes Mone teaming together.
Last night, the ROH Women’s World Champion made her return during a segment with Renee Young and Mercedes Mone. Athena offered Mone a proposition that she simply couldn’t refuse. Now it’s official, Athena and Mercedes Mone will join forces to become the first women to hold the AEW Women’s Tag Team titles.
It’s not hard to understand why Athena chose Mercedes as a tag team partner because the woman has been on fire as of late. However, to Billie Starkz, it feels like a form of betrayal since her and Athena have been partners down in ROH for such a long time.
Starkz wasn’t happy with the recent partnership and voiced her displeasure on social media.
Athena responded and apparently, this is a case where Starkz didn’t pick up her phone.
Whatever the case may be, the dynamic between Starkz, Athena, and Mercedes Mone should be quite interesting. Will they become the first women to hold the AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship? Or could this lead to a rematch for the TBS Championship? Or could this lead to Billie Starkz breaking away from Athena?
Currently, no one particularly stands out as the next challenger for Mone’s prestigious belt. She’s currently focused on becoming the AEW Women’s World Champion, and getting her second chance at the Full Gear pay-per-view next month.
Athena isn’t doing much on the ROH side either. Following her Forbidden Door match against Toni Storm, she took a brief hiatus altogether. There’s not an obvious challenger on the ROH side as of yet, though that will surely change once Final Battle rolls around. Starkz and Athena headlined Final Battle last year, perhaps they may end up fighting against one another again at the upcoming pay-per-view.
This Athena/Mercedes partnership has plenty of interesting directions. Hopefully, this turns out to be something deeper than Mercedes and Athena simply trying to become the new AEW Women’s World Tag Team Champions.
