Matt Sydal quietly made his return over the Summer.
Remember the former WWE star? The 42-year-old is actually signed with AEW. Sydal signed with the promotion back in 2020 and he’s not particularly a name that’s been spotlighted on AEW television.
Sydal was an AEW Dark and Elevation regular, but since those shows were cut, he would get matches here and there in the promotion. The last time Sydal competed on AEW television was on May 22, 2024. That was also the last match he had before he was forced to sit on the sidelines due to injury.
Sydal got surgery on his right foot. He had to both break and re-fuse three bones in addition to having hardware to set his toes into his joints. The AEW star did announce that he getting his foot fixed 14 months ago.
After 12 years of suffering, I’m getting my right foot fixed today. The surgeon has to break and re-fuse three bones, and use hardware to set my toes into the joints. Thank you to @AEW and our Medical Staff for the care. Thanks to the fans who’ve stuck with me the whole time.…
But Sydal was rather quiet about his recent return. His return was so under the radar that people didn’t notice that he wrestled Ultimo Dragon back in July. Sydal came out on the losing end that night.
What’s next for Matt Sydal?
That remains a mystery. Though it seems that the AEW star is good to get back into action, Tony Khan’s plans seemed locked at the moment. It’s not exactly easy to get back onto AEW television if you’re not one of the top stars.
At the moment, there’s no word on whether AEW is trying to book a return for Sydal. He’s actually quite active on social media, with him notably reposting anything AEW related. There was a point where Sydal was teaming with his brother, Mike, in AEW, but that didn’t last too long. There was a point where Matt wanted to win the TNT Championship, but those comments were made when he was still new within the company.
"Absolutely, that's not a New Year's resolution. That's part of what I've been meditating on and thinking on," Sydal stated. "Thinking what it would feel like to be the champion, what it would feel like to have that responsibility, what it would feel like to be champion in AEW so I focus on what it would feel like, and then I'm just going to do the work and get myself there. I'm really acclimating myself, but I have no doubt in my ability to become that TNT Champion."
We’ll find out what happens with Matt Sydal in AEW. There’s no word on how long his deal was, though it seems that it was a five year contract since he signed back in 2020. Again, there’s been no confirmation on that information.
