MJF is the new CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion!
The AEW star is pulling a Mercedes Mone as MJF competed against Averno on the August 1, 2025, edition of CMLL Viernes Espectacular in Arena Mexico. Averno has been the World Light Heavyweight Champion for 435 days; beating top talents such as Esfinge, Zandokan Jr., Legendario, and MJF’s biggest rival, Mistico.
This is the first time that MJF competed for CMLL in 2025. He made his debut for the promotion in 2024 where he defended the now defunct AEW American Title. It didn’t take long for MJF to gloat about winning his belt in CMLL.
However, a challenger quickly emerged as Zandokan Jr. stepped up and he’ll be the first man to take on the cocky AEW star as their match has been confirmed for August 15th. AEW and CMLL are clearly building to a big match between Mistico and MJF, who have been feuding for quite some time now.
MJF has been dealing with some other issues on the AEW side as he’ll be facing Mark Briscoe on Dynamite this Wednesday. Despite having a guaranteed AEW World title contract in his hands, MJF wants to get a title shot while holding onto the Casino contract he won back at All In.
Hangman Page was perfectly fine with that as long as goes through the true number one contender, Mark Briscoe. The 29-year-old confirmed that he will be fighting Briscoe after the former ROH World Champion had a grueling match against Ricochet in the main event of Dynamite.
It’s going to be quite a busy month for Maxwell Jacob Friedman. He seems to be next in line for an AEW World title shot against Page. There’s no guarantee that he’ll beat Briscoe on Wednesday, but it would be shocking if he isn’t fighting for the world title at Forbidden Door.
