Royal Quest has officially come and gone, but that doesn’t mean that there will be rest for the top champions of New Japan Pro Wrestling going forward. The promotion has announced three title matches for the King of Pro Wrestling event, which will take place on Oct. 14 in Ryogoku Sumo Hall.
In the main event, Kazuchika Okada is set to defend the IWGP Heavyweight Championship against SANADA.
The match-up stems from the former IWGP Tag Team Champion being the first man to defeat Okada in the G1 Climax tournament. SANADA hit a TKO and then several moonsaults that ultimately got him the three count on Day 13 of the competition. Both men have one victory a piece over one another, as Okada defeated SANADA back in the finals of the New Japan Cup earlier this year.
In our second confirmed championship bout, Jon Moxley will put his title on the line against the man that also scored a big victory over him during G1 Climax tournament, Juice Robinson. After getting the best of the IWGP United States Champion twice in August, Moxley challenged the former champ to a rematch with the added No Disqualification stipulation.
And in the final title bout, Will Ospreay will defend the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title against the Super J-Cup winner, El Phantasmo. Phantasmo pulled off a big - though controversial - victory over Ospreay in order to advance to the finals of the Super J-Cup tournament and then challenged the England native to rematch with the title on the line, which Ospreay would eventually accept.
We’ll keep you updated for when the company confirms more matches for the King of Pro Wrestling event.
