For the past ten years, PROGRESS has been doing their annual Super Strong Style 16 tournament that’s composed of four rounds. It’s a single elimination tournament that’s set to determine who will challenge the PROGRESS World Champion. Currently, Luke Jacobs holds the prestigious belt and has successfully defended it for 250 plus days.
The history of the tournament stems from the high quality of matches that come from it.
The tournament started in 2015 and Will Ospreay won the inaugural competition. Since Ospreay, Tommy End (Malakai Black), Zack Sabre Jr, and Travis Banks (NXT UK) are the other notable names that have won the yearly tournament. This year’s Super Strong Style 16 promises to be another exciting event and the promotion has already confirmed Man Like Dereiss, Marcus Mathers, Zozaya, Leon Slater, Ethan Allen, Masa Kitamiya and Jack Morris.
Now Charlie Sterling has been confirmed as the next entrant.
Sterling is looking to branch out as a singles star. The England native is a former three-time PROGRESS Tag Team Champion who turned his back on his partner at Chapter 178.
Frustrated, Sterling is hoping to carve out his legacy on his own terms and him entering the Super Strong Style 16 tournament for the first time in his career is the beginning of that journey.
Though Sterling has mainly competed on the tag team circuit in PROGRESS, he’s a former world champion in several other promotions as he’s won the REACH Heavyweight Championship and EVW Heavyweight Championship throughout his career. Sterling has been wrestling for 15 years plus, and he brings experiences within the tournament despite mostly working tag team matches in PROGRESS.
Will Charlie Sterling outlast 15 of his opponents?
We’ll find out on May 5th as the Super Strong Style 16 starts on May 4th and ends on the following day. This is shaping up to be a very loaded tournament!
