Is Alberto El Patron returning to AAA?

One of the most notable things that happened at TripleMania XXXIII was that fans were chanting for Alberto El Patron throughout the night. Rey Mysterio was trying to induct Konnan into the AAA Hall of Fame, but he immediately drowned out by constant demands of “We Want Alberto”. Surprisingly, Mysterio promised that he'll be brought back. There's no word whether Mysterio meant what he said or if was just trying to calm the crowd down.

On the follow-up to this, Dave Meltzer stated on the Wrestling Observer that WWE has no plans to bring Patron back, but that doesn’t mean he’s done with AAA.

“As of right now, there are no plans for Alberto El Patron in the U.S. market. But that could change. The belief is he will return to AAA soon. There are those in WWE who do want him on the main roster as they see his work as excellent in AAA (his matches are nothing but he does carry himself like a major superstar), since he was the most over guy and see him now as a guy who can be a major heel on the main roster or the top face on the AAA roster. However there is the negative baggage, including the social media reaction to him. That led to them taking the title off him and going with El Hijo del Vikingo, who the original idea would be the world champion and face of the Mexico promotion and also get exposure on major WWE television in an initial idea.”

To recall, Patron recently lost a loser leaves town match to Mesias at a recent AAA show. That came after Alberto El Patron dropped the AAA Mega Championship to El Hijo del Vikingo at AAA Alianzas. It was reported by Sean Ross Sapp last month that despite Patron disappearing from AAA Lucha Libre, that WWE absolutely has no interest in bringing back the former WWE Champion.

It was strange how fast Patron was removed from the company once WWE took over, but as mentioned above, there was considerable amount of backlash as fans thought that Patron would make his way over to WWE. It should be interesting to see if Patron does make a AAA return. WWE is clearly trying to introduce their audience to the Lucha Libre promotion and it could be harmful for the company to bring him back, even if he remains in AAA. We’ll see what happens over time.
