UFC stars Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have been slapped with temporary suspensions by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) as it investigates the wild brawl that took place following their match at UFC 229 this past weekend.
Nurmagomedov, the UFC lightweight champion, defeated McGregor, who was making his return to the Octagon after a nearly two-year hiatus, in the fourth round of their main event bout at UFC 229. However, it was what happened after the fight that has sparked controversy.
Immediately after submitting McGregor, Nurmagomedov hurled his mouthpiece towards McGregor's corner and jumped over the top of the cage to attack McGregor's teammate Dillon Danis. The NAC has continued to withhold Nurmagomedov's $2 million fight purse but has paid McGregor his $3 million payout.
The temporary suspensions for both fighters are for the maximum 10 days. The NAC will meet on October 24 to vote on whether to indefinitely suspend both fighters pending the completion of their investigation into the incident.
News of the suspension comes the same day as
Nurmagomedov threatened to quit the promotion should the UFC punish his teammates who participated in the melee. Nurmagomedov specifically mentioned Zubaira Tukhugov, who was scheduled to fight McGregor's teammate Artem Lobov at UFC Moncton on October 27.
