After weeks of back and forth, it sounds like the fight between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is on.
The former double champ tweeted on Wednesday that he has accepted a January 23 fight against Poirier. He added that he wants the fight to be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
"I accept, Jan 23rd is on!" McGregor wrote. "My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium. Proper Style! Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans! Then Manny."
McGregor, of course, is referring to professional boxer Manny Pacquiao. McGregor recently expressed interest in facing Pacquiao in the boxing ring and even explained that part of his preparation for the fight would be a match against Poirier.
"Southpaw box style. Continue to sharpen my MMA skills with some tough competition, while leading into my Manny bout preparation," McGregor said in response to speculation from Poirier. "It’s not easy going between both sports and then coming back to the one sport again. Just want to keep sharp guys, that’s all. It’s only fair."
Back to the Octagon, though, McGregor has reportedly only verbally agreed to the fight with sources saying there's nothing official yet. Poirier told ESPN's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday that the UFC has yet to reach out to him about the fight. However, he responded to McGregor's tweet, asking "What weight?"
Should an agreement be met, this would actually be a rematch between McGregor and Poirier who had previously met in 2014 at UFC 178. McGregor won by first round TKO. Both fighters have since risen to the top of the UFC's rankings. McGregor was previously champion of both the lightweight and featherweight divisions; however, he no longer holds any belts. His most recent fight was a 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone in January.
Poirier lost to current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in 2019 but rebounded with a nice unanimous win over Dan Hooker in June.
A rematch between McGregor and Poirier would certainly be an exciting fight to kick off 2021.
